The Do’s and Don’ts of a Backyard Wedding

Planning the backyard bash of your dreams? Check out these do’s and don’ts!

Do: Embrace the Charm of Your Space

Your backyard is more than just a piece of land; it’s a canvas for your big day! Do get creative with the layout. Think about where you’ll say “I do,” where guests will mingle, and how you’ll set up that cozy dining area. Use its unique features – maybe a lovely old tree can become a focal point, or a flower bed can guide the aisle.

Don’t: Forget About Your Neighbors

Love thy neighbors, especially when you’re throwing a backyard bash! Don’t forget to inform them about your wedding plans. A small heads-up can go a long way in maintaining peace and understanding. You might even consider inviting them to avoid any noise complaints (this is what my husband and I did and it was perfect!).

Do: Plan for All Weather

Rain or shine, your wedding must go on! Do have a backup plan for unexpected weather. Renting a tent can save the day in case of rain, and having fans or heaters will keep your guests comfortable no matter what Mother Nature has in store.

Plus, there are so many creative ways to dress up your tent—you can even rent a tent with a clear roof.

Don’t: Overlook the Logistics

Restrooms, parking, and accessibility – oh my! Don’t overlook these crucial details. Ensure there are enough facilities for your guests, consider renting high-quality portable restrooms, and plan out where guests can park without causing a neighborhood traffic jam.

Do: Light Up the Night

As the sun sets, let your backyard twinkle! Do invest in good lighting. String lights, lanterns, and candles can create a magical ambiance that not only looks stunning but also ensures everyone can see where they’re going (no tripping over Aunt Edna’s poodle!).

Quick Tip: There are many options when it comes to lighting up your big night—you can rent or purchase them and hang them yourself or rent them through your tent rental company and they will hang them for you. Rent them through your tent company, it’s so worth it.

Don’t: Skimp on Food and Drink

A hungry guest is a grumpy guest. Don’t skimp on the catering – whether it’s a fancy sit-down dinner, a laid-back barbecue, or trendy food trucks, ensure there’s plenty of food and drink to go around. And yes, a backyard s’mores station is always a hit!

Do: Get Creative with Decor

Your backyard wedding allows for tons of personal touches. Do get creative with your decor. Handmade signs, family photos, and DIY centerpieces add a personal, cozy feel that traditional venues can’t match. Looking for some ideas? Don’t: Stress About Perfection

Your backyard might not be a five-star hotel, but that’s the charm of it! Don’t stress about making everything perfect. A bit of uneven ground or a few pesky bugs won’t ruin your day – it’s all part of the memorable experience.

Do: Hire Professionals When Needed

Just because it’s at home doesn’t mean you have to do it all. Do hire professionals, like a wedding planner, a photographer, a band or a DJ, to take some of the burdens off your shoulders and ensure your day runs smoothly.

P.S. Splurging on good music and a good MC is so worth every penny.

Don’t: Forget to Enjoy Every Moment

This is your special day, in your special place! Don’t get too caught up in the details that you forget to enjoy it. Take a deep breath, look around at all your loved ones who’ve gathered to celebrate you, and soak in every moment.
